Duran & Venables Helps with New Facility for Society for the Blind
July 8, 2008 Sacramento, CA - In 1953, a committee of the Sacramento County Adult Blind planned and organized an association that was to become the Society for the Blind, a private 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency. Their purpose was to develop an entity under the auspices of which visually impaired people of all ages, backgrounds and interests could meet to interact with one another, plan and enjoy social functions, and benefit from rehabilitation services. After 55 years of providing services for the blind throughout Northern California, the Society for the Blind needed to expand to a larger facility. The organization has been successfully raising funds to purchase and renovate a 20,000 square-foot building located at 13th and S Street in midtown Sacramento. A total of $5 million is needed, of that $2.1 million will be used to purchase the building and $1.9 million will be used to renovate.
Along with cash pledges, many companies have also contributed in-kind services for the project. Otto Construction took the responsibility as the General Contractor, and asked Duran & Venables to join the team. In May of this year, Duran & Venables offered their construction services, pro bono, to perform concrete demolition, off-haul of broken concrete, and grading for the new sidewalks. Duran & Venables was proud to be part of this worthwhile cause.
The new facility will allow expansion in the following areas; programs for the blind children and youth, employment training programs, public technology access programs, support for the blind and their families, low vision clinic services, products for the independence store, public outreach along with a designated area for service animals.
